Course Numbering
As of the 2026-2027 academic year, courses at Hebrew Union College are identified by a three-letter prefix, indicating the academic department, and a four-digit number. Prior to the 2026-2027 academic year, courses at HUC were identified by a three-letter prefix and a three-digit number. This course numbering system provides for a unique course code for each course offered at HUC. The first digit of a course number indicates the academic level. The other three digits indicate a unique course within each academic field and their natural sequence of complexity. Higher numbers are given to more advanced courses. Generally, consecutive numbers represent a required course sequence and the lower number in the sequence may be a prerequisite for enrollment in the higher numbered course.
Course codes begin with one of the following prefixes:
- BIB: Bible and Its Interpretation
- EDU: Education
- HEB: Hebrew
- HIS: History
- ISR: Israel Studies
- JLL: Jewish Language & Literature
- JTI: Jewish Textual Interpretation
- MGT: Management
- MUS: Music
- PDE: Professional Development
- PHI: Philosophy
- RAB: Rabbinics & Rabbinic Literature
- THE: Theology
- THS: Thesis
- WRL: Worship, Ritual, & Liturgy
Courses are numbered according to the following guidelines:
- 4000-level courses are pre-graduate level courses that are used to prepare students for graduate-level coursework; these courses are not intended to satisfy degree requirements
- 5000-level courses are for master’s level courses
- 6000-level courses are for master’s students
- 7000-level courses are for advanced master’s students and first-year doctoral students
- 8000-level courses are for doctoral students
- 9000-level courses are for advanced doctoral students
If a course has not been offered for five years, that course code will be retired. Retired course codes may be reused for a newly developed course after five additional years.
