Academic Catalog 2025-2026

Academic Standing

Students properly enrolled at HUC fall within the following categories:

Good Standing: eligible to continue at or return to HUC

  • not on probation.
  • making acceptable progress toward their degree or certificate which includes maintaining a minimum grade of "P" or "B-" in no less than 80% of the total attempted credits.
  • earned grades at the "Pass" or "B-" level or higher.
  • no more than one LP or C+ or lower in a semester.

Academic Probation

  • received two or more grades of "LP" or lower than "B-'" and/or fails one or more courses in a semester or term OR is not making acceptable progress toward their degree or certificate.
  • has received another "LP", "C", or "F" during a period of probation.

Probation

Based on the standards above, the Registrar's Office will determine which students are placed on Academic Probation and communicate that information to the Program Directors and Financial Aid Office.

The Program Director shall meet with the student to provide counseling and guidance and may convene a Student-Tenure Committee. Academic action will be determined by the student's Program Director and/or Student-Tenure Committee. Students may be also placed on academic probation by their academic Program Director or a Student-Tenure Committee.

While on academic probation, students typically enroll in a reduced number of credits whether these come from HUC courses, or consortium, cross-campus, or dual program credit programs. The number of credits for which a student is permitted to register may be stipulated by the academic Program Director or Student-Tenure Committee.

While on probation, students will meet with their Program Advisor to discuss a possible reduction in outside commitments and fieldwork hours. Students will be removed from probation when they have completed 12 semester hours under the following conditions:

  • All work for each course must be completed by the end of its semester, without incurring any Incompletes.
  • All incomplete work from previous semesters must be completed.
  • The grade received in each course must be Pass (B) or better.

Any student who incurs a total of two occurrences of academic probation over the course of their academic program(s) will be recommended to a Student-Tenure Committee for possible academic suspension or permanent dismissal from HUC.

Every semester, each Program Director must communicate with the Registrar and Financial Aid Office about students on probation. This report will be used in determining a student's satisfactory academic progress (SAP) and eligibility for financial aid.

The procedures governing a Student-Tenure Committee are described under "Student-Tenure Review".

Student Status

Students leave the College under one of the following statuses. Since students are admitted to a program of study, if they leave that program of study voluntarily or involuntarily, any absence applies to the entire institution rather than merely to the program. All instances of withdrawal, suspension, and dismissal will be posted to the student's permanent academic record.

Leave of Absence: temporary absence from HUC for health, family, or other reasons, within a term or year; for a maximum of one year unless extended by an updated application; start and end dates typically on an academic day within a term; reinstated only after consideration and approval of an application submitted no later than three months prior to the start of the next academic term. If a student doesn't return from a LOA, the student's status will be changed to Voluntarily Withdrew with the effective date noted as the starting date of the original leave of absence.

Voluntarily Withdrawn: temporary or permanent absence from HUC; effective immediately, beginning between or during terms, for the remainder of a term; no end date. Before a one-year absence has elapsed, the student may submit an Application for Reinstatement through the committee, submitted no later than three months prior to the start of the next academic term. After a one-year absence, a new application for admission is required, to the Office of Recruitment and Admission.

Administratively Withdrawn: involuntarily separated from HUC for reasons of non-communication, non-registration, non-attendance, or unwillingness to voluntarily withdraw; also, for cases of "danger to self or others", typically for one term. This might also be used for unprofessional behavior related to communication, responsiveness, or other expected norms not always directly related to completing course requirements. Effective immediately, beginning during a term, for the remainder of a term. Ends with the last day of a term, converting to either Voluntarily Withdrawn (without action) or reinstatement only after consideration and approval of an application submitted no later than three months prior to the start of the next academic term.

Suspended (Academic): for at least one fall or spring semester (or longer as determined by a program director and/or Student-Tenure Committee), based on failure to meet satisfactory academic-progress standards. Should be initially assigned based on policy (e.g., student with multiple substandard or failing grades or with multiple terms on probation with or without Student-Tenure Committee involvement). Ends with the last day of a term, converting to either Voluntarily Withdrawn (without action) or reinstatement only after consideration and approval of an application submitted no later than 3 months prior to the start of the next academic term.

Suspended (Non-Academic): involuntary separation from HUC for threatened or actual misbehavior on or off campus, adjudicated by Director of Student Support and/or Student-Tenure Committees; likely requires some "remediation" with counseling or other effort. Ends with the last day of a term, converting to either Voluntarily Withdrawn (without action) or reinstatement only after consideration and approval of an application submitted no later than three months prior to the start of the next academic term.

Permanently Dismissed: For students who have failed three courses over two academic years. May also be determined by the Director of Student Support for non-academic reasons and/or a Student-Tenure Committee. Students may appeal to a Student-Tenure Committee for immediate reinstatement, citing extenuating circumstances. No possibility of reinstatement to any program at HUC.

Students in the Pines School of Graduate Studies should refer to the school's handbook for policies regarding academic progress and good standing.

Class Standing

Class standing and progress through the curriculum are determined by the Faculty and Program Directors.
