BIB 616 Bible and its Earliest Interpreters
This course surveys interpretive literature and approaches towards the Hebrew Bible in ancient Judaism. We begin with interpretations within the Bible itself—from one biblical text interpreting another to the markers of interpretation found on the pages of a modern Bible, such as niqqud, te'amim, and text division. The course also includes analysis of biblical interpretation from the Apocrypha, Josephus, Dead Sea Scrolls, New Testament, Synagogue Art, and various genres of Rabbinic Literature.
