Academic Catalog 2026-2027

MUS 5480 Yom Kippur I

In this course, students will internalize the nus’cha’ot and core repertoire which form the soundscape of American Jewish congregations on Yom Kippur and Selichot, according to Ashkenazic liturgy. Using scores and recordings by great cantors and synagogue composers ranging from the 1840s to the 2020s, as well as closely comparing the texts of traditional and Reform machzorim, students will continue honing their own interpretive voices as emerging stewards of a musico-spiritual tradition which stretches back two millenia. Through integrative learning with other High Holy Day classes and by actively creating and refining best practices for communal prayer at present, students will apply lessons in real time, enriching worship at their fieldwork assignments and within the larger HUC community.
