MUS 5002 Shabbat Integrative Seminar I
In this course, students will further internalize the liturgy, nus’cha’ot* and core repertoire which form the foundational soundscape of American Jewish congregations on Shabbat, according to Ashkenazic practice. Using scores and recordings by great cantors and synagogue composers ranging from the 1840s to the 2020s, as well as closely comparing the texts of traditional and Reform siddurim, students will begin to find their own interpretive voices as the newest stewards of the Jewish people’s musico-spiritual tradition. Through integrative learning and by refining best practices for communal prayer at present, students will apply lessons in real time, enriching worship at their fieldwork assignments and within the larger HUC community.
