HLT 527 Jewish Christianity in the Ancient Period

The objective of this course will be to explore the history and theology of the Jewish Christians, especially the Ebionites, from the earliest times until their disappearance, probably in the fifth century. The point of departure will be the earliest testimonia about Jewish Christians, in Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Hippolytus, and later heresiological texts. We will then turn to those sources that can be most reliably attributed to the Jewish Christians themselves, namely, the pseudo-Clementine literature, and in particular the Letter from Peter to James and the Homilies.
