HLT 516 Greek Pagan Exe
The objective of this course will be to examine some important texts pertaining to ancient interpretation of literary texts. The focus will be on texts in which the relevant exegetical issues are posed in a theoretical fashion, or which constitute representative examples of various exegetical tendencies. We will pay special attention to the Peripatetic-Alexandrian tradition on the one hand and the Stoic-Pergamene (allegorical) tradition on the other. Among the authors from whom selections will be read: Pseudo-Plutarch, Strabo, Heraclitus, Cornutus, Porphyry. Other later sources, including some scholia on classical texts, and the commentary of Eustathius on Homer, will be examined for the light they shed on earlier exegetical matters.
