503 Advanced Seminar in Modern Jewish Thought

Letter grading or Pass-Fail. Prerequisite: RTE 403. This seminar is designed to help students develop their philosophical and theological thinking beyond Introduction to Modern Jewish Thought. We spend our time together in extended conversation about a small number of philosophical or theological works, to be determined. They will be our guides as we consider a number of significant and enduring tensions in Judaism: autonomy and constraint; universalism and particularism; reason and emotion; and Judaism’s relationship to Christianity, among others. Students' primary responsibility is to prepare weekly for class so that our conversations are enriched by all the voices at our table. Elective.
