THE 700 Contemporary Theologies
This course explores contemporary and recent Jewish theological writings by a wide range of denominational and post-denomination positions since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. With eyes toward the big questions of meaning that currently occupy Jews, Jewish community leaders, and clergy, we will encounter different types of theology (e.g., Liberation, Process, Queer), denominational differences among contemporary theologians, innovative approaches in liturgy, and translation, and key issues of our age (e.g., social justice, political dissent, illness/suffering, halakha, the State of Israel). In looking at the challenges and contradictions of our own time, the class makes the theological personal and encourages students to develop and test their own theological positions vis contemporary Jewish theologians.
