LIT 700 Sermons of the Ancient Synagogue
Both grading types. This course surveys the history, forms and functions of synagogue sermons from the early first century until the early middle ages. Students will explore the various genres of ancient sermons as well as from where those who crafted sermons drew their material—such as art, poetry, translation, and polemic. This course includes extensive readings in rabbininc Hebrew from sources such as Bereshit Rabbah, VaYiqra Rabbah, Tanhumah-Yelamdenu and similar collections.
