HIS 6004 History of Reform Judaism

Among the themes we will explore: the structuring of sacred time and domestic space; food, dress, and bodily practice; family life, gender, and lifecycle rituals; relations with non-Jewish neighbors and authorities; and the transmission of knowledge and tradition across generations. By the end of the course, students will have a vivid, grounded understanding of how medieval Jews built and sustained their beliefs amidst different — and what it meant, in concrete human terms, to live a Jewish life.
