HEB 566 Hebrew Poetry as a Modern Midrash

Modern Israeli poetry is a significant contributor to a body of original Israeli cultural, spiritual and political traditions. In this course, we will read various Israeli Hebrew poets with an eye towards their religious commentary and insights. We will follow their ongoing conversation with Jewish sources and reconstruct their religious and spiritual landscapes. Students will have the opportunity to deepen their appreciation of Hebrew as an art medium by translating some of the poems on their own.
