BIB 001 The Great Jewish Bookshelf

This course gives students a survey of the great books and literature of Judaism over the last 2,500 years. Discussions of peoplehood appear in a number of different ways in each historical period and, therefore, in the texts and voices of each period. Historical context helps students understand the differences to be observed as together we read selections carefully chosen from biblical, rabbinic, medieval, mystical, and modern sources.

Thoughtfully guided throughout by our teacher, Rabbi Emily Langowitz, each class includes faculty members from across HUC-JIR sharing their expertise. Students sharpen their skills in the Jewish practice of close reading during class and outside of class in chevruta (traditional, paired Jewish study).
